Indiana Motorcycle License Requirements

You must be at least 16 and a half years old to ride a motorcycle in Indiana and obtain a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license. There are two ways to do this:

• If you are at least 16 years and 90 days old, you can complete a Ride Safe Indiana-approved motorcycle education course.

OR

• If you are at least 16 years and 270 days old, you can bypass the education course and complete a motorcycle-riding skills exam instead. You must also pass a standard vision screening test.

If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian to sign an Agreement of Financial Liability before you can obtain your learner’s permit.

Motorcycle Part Requirements in Indiana

According to Indiana Code 9-19, motorcycles must be equipped with:

• Brakes in good working order that can be operated by hand or foot
• No more than two headlamps at a height of at least 24 in. and no more than 54 in. (if manufactured after 1956)
• One rear reflector
• Rear-view mirrors
• Turn signals
• A speedometer
• Handlebars no more than 15 in. above the seat (or no higher than shoulder height)

Indiana Motorcycle Helmet Law

Indiana residents under 18 must wear a helmet that complies with standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Riders under 18 must also wear protective glasses, goggles, or have a transparent face shield.

Riders 18 and over do not have to wear a helmet in Indiana.

Indiana Motorcycle Traffic Regulations

Like any other driver, motorcyclists must obey all traffic regulations that apply to the operation of a motor vehicle. However, some additional laws pertain specifically to motorcycles, which include the following:

• Motorcyclists may ride side-by-side with another motorcycle in a single lane so long as both riders consent to this.
• Motorcyclists are entitled to full use of a traffic lane, and other vehicles are prohibited from driving in a way that deprives the motorcycle of the full use of a lane.
• Motorcyclists may not carry a passenger if it interferes with the driver’s ability to operate the motorcycle or obstructs their view.
• Motorcyclists may not carry a package that prevents them from keeping both hands on the handlebars.

Yes. Any resident in Indiana who operates a motor vehicle—including motorcycles—must carry the minimum insurance coverage for liability required by the state, which is as follows:
